Optimizing Waste Diversion for a National Retailer
A national retailer was looking for a more efficient and cost-effective way to manage excess materials from their operations. Their existing waste disposal process led to unnecessary landfill use and missed opportunities for reuse. They needed a solution that prioritized sustainability while keeping costs down.

The Challenge
Initially, the retailer estimated that hauling away their materials would require only two to three 16-yard trucks. On arrival we noticed the volume was much greater than initially assessed by store personnel However, after assessing the volume and type of materials on-site, it became clear that a more strategic approach was needed to maximize reuse and minimize landfill waste. Many of the discarded items, including shopping carts, could be repurposed rather than simply disposed of.
The Solution
We implemented a customized hauling strategy, ensuring that reusable materials were separated and transported for repurposing. Instead of a one-size-fits-all disposal plan, we optimized the process by:
✔ Deploying two 20-yard trucks for landfill disposal.
✔ Assigning one 16-yard truck specifically for transporting reusable items.
✔ Rescuing 1,400 lbs of shopping carts, which were redirected into a PPE laundering program.
The Process
By carefully sorting materials on-site, we ensured that valuable resources were diverted before reaching the landfill. A total of 56 yards of material was moved, and through our intervention, 40% was successfully diverted for reuse. Meanwhile, 6,000 lbs of non-reusable materials were responsibly handled, eliminating waste in the most efficient way possible.
The Results
This retailer was able to cut down on unnecessary waste disposal, lower hauling costs, and contribute to a more circular economy. By integrating reuse into their waste management approach, they not only improved sustainability efforts but also created a smarter, more cost-effective system for handling excess inventory.
Because the more we divert, the more they save.
