The Challenge

Large grocery retailers routinely manage a wide range of non-sellable products, including returns, damaged packaging, and expired or near-expiry items that can no longer remain on shelves but are still safe and usable for community organizations. A significant challenge for Sprouts was the ongoing volume of health and wellness products, which often require disposal due to expiration dates and strict handling requirements. Sprouts locations set aside eligible items, enabling consistent, recurring diversion rather than large, infrequent clear-outs. This approach reduced disposal costs while ensuring products were redirected quickly and responsibly before becoming a larger waste burden.

These items were matched with verified local nonprofits, supporting local communities while offering a lower-cost alternative to hazardous waste disposal.

The Process

Product Collection: Happen Ventures manages the product collection process from start to finish, including identifying, organizing, and setting aside eligible items such as over-the-counter vitamins, supplements, personal care, and beauty products. Store employees only submit a pickup request with the click of a button, while Happen Ventures handles all remaining logistics.

On average, each location generates a full reuse tote every 2–3 weeks, creating a consistent and predictable diversion stream without disrupting store operations.

Community Matching & Pickup: Happen Ventures works directly with trusted local nonprofits near each store, strengthening Sprouts’ connection to the surrounding community. Once products are ready, matched nonprofit partners coordinate and complete the pickup with communities located 15-30 minutes away, allowing store employees to remain focused on daily operations while ensuring donations stay local and impactful.

Validation & Impact Tracking: Happen Ventures validated each donation and documented the reuse activity, ensuring compliance, transparency, and measurable impact for Sprouts’ sustainability reporting.
